The Quiet Between Things

The Quiet Between Things

Today wasn’t remarkable. Nothing big happened, nothing dramatic shifted. But there was a moment this afternoon that stayed with me — a small pause in the middle of an ordinary day.

I was moving slowly, partly because of fibro, partly because my mind felt a bit foggy. I’d gone into the kitchen to make a drink, and for some reason I stopped halfway through the motion of reaching for the mug. Not because of pain, not because I forgot what I was doing — just because something in me needed a second.

It was quiet.
Not peaceful, not profound.
Just quiet.

The kind of quiet that sits between two thoughts.

I leaned on the counter and let myself breathe. The house felt still in a way I don’t usually notice. No pressure, no rush, no expectation. Just me, standing there, letting the moment be what it was.

It struck me how rarely I allow myself that kind of pause. I’m usually pushing through the day, trying to keep up with my body, trying to keep ahead of my mind. But this tiny interruption — this small, unplanned stillness — felt like something my body had been asking for.

It didn’t fix anything.
It didn’t change the day.
But it softened it.

And maybe that’s the point of these small pauses. They don’t transform life. They just make it feel a little more possible, a little less sharp around the edges.

I think I need more moments like that — the quiet between things.
